Lenten Bible Study
For the 2017 Lenten season, plans are to focus on Christianity’s most famous prayer,
Lord’s Prayer.
We will be using John Dominic Crossan, The Greatest Prayer:
Rediscovering the Revolutionary Message of the Lord’s Prayer. New York: HarperCollins, 2011.
It is a prayer that we say together every Sunday in our worship together. Moreover,
it is a prayer that most of us know by heart and one we carry with us wherever we go.
Nevertheless, familiarity can have its negatives, the main one assuming we know
the spiritual depths our Lord is affirming in this model for prayer.
Cost for the book is $11.00. See Bill Kneebone for a copy.
The remaining sessions in the Ladies Parlor will run from
Wednesday, March 15 to Wednesday, April 5 at 2:00 P.M.
Singers Needed
There has been some interest in forming a small choir for our church to possibly
sing on special occasions or even once a month. The best news is that Cathy,
our organist, is interested too!
We would not be doing the Messiah (at least to start), but do some very simple things.
To start, we might sing four-part harmony of some familiar hymns from the hymnal.
Practices would probably be before church on Sundays. You do NOT have to be an
opera singer or even read music.
All that is required is an interest....and some ability to carry a tune!
If you are intrigued by this possibility, please let Cathy or George know.
Lenten Banner
The banner hanging in the front of the sanctuary represents the wilderness,
reminding us of the forty days that Jesus spent there, fasting and being tempted by the devil.
The palms are for Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. And the purple, the color of
royalty is a reference to Christ the King. The variety of purples and the black lettering
remind us of the pain, suffering and passion that we remember as we pray during this season.
Bordering the banner is the color of white that represents the anticipation of the Easter season.
Palm Sunday - One Great Hour of Sharing Offering
Our offering makes the love of Christ real for individuals and communities around the
world who suffer from disaster, conflict, or poverty.
One Great Hour of Sharing ministries reach people worldwide, including the
United States. Together we provide disaster relief, health care, education, job training,
shelter, schools clean water, and food.
Our offering to One Great Hour of Sharing helps meet the needs that make the
headlines and needs that headlines ignore. We give to this ministry on Palm Sunday (April 9),
but the good work done by our gifts gives life again, and again, and last much longer.
EASTER FLOWERS
Flowers really contribute to the beauty and sacredness of our Church on Easter Sunday.
Donations for Easter Flowers can be given to Anne Oakes.
If the donation is in memory or in honor of individuals, please include a written
notation of how you wish it to appear in the Easter bulletin on April 16.
All are encouraged to help to decorate our Church as we celebrate and glorify our Risen Lord.
