Service of Worship
PENTACOST SUNDAY
PRELUDE
(All are encouraged to use the prelude as a quiet time of meditation in
preparation for the worship service which follows.)
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREETING
The grace of our LORD Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion
of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13: 13)
And also with you.
HYMN 500* Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart (verses 1,2 and 4)
CALL TO WORSHIP* (Please stand.)
LEADER Be still, and know that God is.
PEOPLE God was, also, in the beginning.
LEADER And when all human striving has ceased, God will still be.
PEOPLE From everlasting to everlasting,
God is God and alone is worthy to be worshiped.
LEADER Let us sing praise to our God
OPENING PRAYER*
CONFESSION OF SIN
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1: 8-9)
Let us confess our sins before God and one another.
Faithful God, we rejoice that you have sent your promised Christ. And
yet, O God, we confess that we are still not ready for Christ’s coming; we
are reluctant to live as if the whole earth were your domain. We know
the story – the shepherds, the angels, and the magi – but we don’t
fully understand what it means. Awaken us to your Spirit, let Christ’s
birth make a difference in our lives and in the lives of our brothers and
sisters everywhere and grant us your peace . . ..
SILENCE (Silence may be observed for reflection and prayer.)
ASSURANCE OF GOD’S LOVE AND FORGIVENESS
Remember that we are chosen by Christ, who reconciles us to God. Christ
presents us holy and blameless before God. May we continue in the faith, remain
stable and steadfast and not shift from the hope of the gospel which we have
heard. For in Christ we are forgiven. Amen

Lyrics to the Hymns and Responsive Reading
for the May 23 Service
HYMN 500* Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart (verses 1,2 and 4)
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth; through all its pulses move;
stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I ought to love.
I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay,
no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away.
Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear.
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh, teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
HYMN 420* Breathe on Me, Breath of God
Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.
Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will, to do and to endure.
Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine,
till all this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.
Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.
HYMN 393* (Sung twice) Spirit of the Living God
Spirit of the Living God, Fall a-fresh on me
Spirit of the Living God, Fall a-fresh on me
Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me
Spirit of the Living God, Fall a-fresh on me
(Repeat)
