Thank you God, for your covenant signs in this season of Lent. Amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Sisters and Brothers, in our daily lives we need the gift of the season of Lent. These 40 days can help us restore right relationships with God and with others. This is a fine time to focus, clear our hearts and minds of distractions, and re-orient and restore our whole selves. May God be with us. Let us pray: PRAYER: Creating and Renewing God. In this Lenten season we each need the opportunity to clear our eyes of the glaze of indifference and apathy. Help us get our minds off distractions, obsessions and self-pity so that we don’t feel helpless. Help us to start over. Re-orient head and heart so that we may fill our whole selves with life-affirming activities and thoughts. (Silence) May I be in right relationship with you and all your creation and join the United Church of Christ in over-coming violence, hunger, and injustice. May I find courage and clarity to assist me in works of justice and compassion which make daily life bearable for many. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. SILENCE (observed for reflection and prayer.) Rosemary McCombs Maxey, a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, who is retired clergy and a member of Fellowship Congregational United Church of Christ, Tulsa, Oklahoma. _________________________________________________________________________ Lyrics to the Hymns and Responsive Readings for the February 21 Service HYMN 269 Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Lord, who throughout these forty days for us didst fast and pray, teach us with thee to mourn our sins and close by thee to stay. As thou with Satan didst contend, and didst the victory win, O give us strength in thee to fight, in thee to conquer sin. As thou didst hunger bear, and thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord, to die to self, and chiefly live by thy most holy word. And through these days of penitence, and through thy passiontide, yea, evermore in life and death, Jesus, with us abide. Abide with us, that so, this life of suffering over past, an Easter of unending joy we may attain at last. HYMN 430 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee O Master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free; tell me thy secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care. Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way. Teach me thy patience; still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong; In hope that sends a shining ray far down the future's broadening way, in peace that only thou canst give, with thee, O Master, let me live. HYMN 256 We Would See Jesus We would see Jesus; lo! his star is shining above the stable while the angels sing; there in a manger on the hay reclining; haste, let us lay our gifts before the King. We would see Jesus, Mary's son most holy, light of the village life from day to day; shining revealed through every task most lowly, the Christ of God, the life, the truth, the way. We would see Jesus, on the mountain teaching, with all the listening people gathered round; while birds and flowers and sky above are preaching the blessedness which simple trust has found. We would see Jesus, in his work of healing, at eventide before the sun was set; divine and human, in his deep revealing of God made flesh, in loving service met. We would see Jesus, in the early morning, still as of old he calleth, "Follow me!" Let us arise, all meaner service scorning; Lord, we are thine, we give ourselves to thee. PSALM 25:1-10 Hymnal, pages 756-757 R
1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 2 O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. 3 Let none that wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are clothed with treachery. 4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. 5 Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. R 6 Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. 7 Remember not the sins of my youth, or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord! 8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. 9 and leads the humble in what is right, and teaches them their way. 10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
