SERVICE OF WORSHIP
Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost

PRELUDE
            (All are encouraged to use the prelude as a quiet time of meditation in
            preparation for the worship service which follows.)

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND GREETING

            The grace of our LORD Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
            the Holy Spirit be with you all.        (2 Corinthians 13: 13)

            And also with you.

CALL TO WORSHIP* (Please stand.)

            All: Lord, we seek to bless you at all times.
            Let your praise live forever in our word and deed.
            Fill our souls with humility and gladness.
            Let us exalt your name together. Amen

HYMN 426 *                                                                                      Behold A Broken World

OPENING PRAYER*

CONFESSION OF SIN

            If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
            If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins
            and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.          (I John 1: 8-9)

            Let us confess our sins before God and one another.

            God who knows the innermost workings of hearts and minds, we seek
            your compassion and mercy as we confess our sins. In our imperfect
            understanding of you, we can only claim imperfect love, imperfect
            forgiveness. In our days spent in your creation we so often miss the mark
            of living into Christ’s message by letting Christ’s love transform us. You
            gave us a guide in Jesus so that we might know you more intimately, but
            we rejected him. We lift up our imperfection to you. Help guide us back to
            you in the embodied evidence of your overwhelming grace.

SILENCE        (Silence may be observed for reflection and prayer.)

Lyrics to the Hymns and Responsive Reading
for the August 8 Service

426                 Behold a Broken World

Behold a broken world, we pray, where want and war increase,
and grant us, Lord, in this our day, the ancient dream of peace:

A dream of swords to sickles bent, of spears to scythe and spade,
the weapons of our warfare spent, a world of peace remade;

Where every battle-flag is furled and every trumpet stilled,
where wars shall cease in all the world, a waking dream fulfilled.

No force of arms shall there prevail nor justice cease its sway;
nor shall their loftiest visions fail the dreamers of the day.

O Prince of peace, who died to save, a lost world to redeem,
and rose in triumph from the grave, behold our waking dream.

Bring, Lord, your better world to birth, your kingdom, love's domain;
where peace with God, and peace on earth, and peace eternal reign.

474                 Precious Lord, Take My Hand

Precious Lord, take my hand, Lead me on, let me stand,
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light:
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.

When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near,
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call, Hold my hand lest I fall,
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.

When the darkness appears and the night draws near,
And the day is past and gone,
At the river I stand, Guide my feet, hold my hand,
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.

368                 My Hope Is Built

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Refrain:
On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.
(Refrain)

His oath, his covenant, his blood supports me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.
(Refrain)

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found!
Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne!
(Refrain)
