WINDHAM-UNION ASSOCIATION SPRING MEETING
June 8, 2014

Westminster West Congregational Church
Registration at 1:15 P.M.
Business Meeting at 1:30 P.M.

The spring meeting is the time when the Association does its business; reporting on its activities, hearing a short message from the Vermont Conference, electing officers and adopting a budget.

Most importantly, it’s also a time for the Association to gather for worship, fellowship and shared ministry.

The Spring Meeting will be an important event in the life of the Association and the life of Dr. Lise Sparrow, as the Association meets as an Ecclesiastical Council to see if it will approve Lise for ordination as a minister in the United Church of Christ.

Commemorative Bell Ringing, May 5 at 4:00 P.M.
Our church will join a state-wide bell ringing to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia.

May 5th was the day our current building was dedicated in 1892, but this same date in 1864 was described by Vermont Civil War Historian Howard Coffin as, “The deadliest day in the state of Vermont….” Vermont suffered 1,420 casualties: dead, wounded, captured, and missing in the two day battle that began General Grant’s 1864 Overland Campaign that resulted in the eventual fall of Richmond in April, 1865. The close quarter fighting was in a dense second growth forest with tangled underbrush that made the enemy difficult to see. In addition, sparks from rifle fire ignited dried leaves on the ground and resulted in many fires among the fighting.

The Kottkamps have visited and possess photos of the new monument to the Vermont troops in the midst of the forest where they held a critical crossroads. Vermont Senator James Jeffords was instrumental in the placement of this memorial. All church family members are invited to the ringing of our 1839 bell; the larger community will also be invited.
