Bocce Makes a Big Comeback in Ludlow Through the dedication of David Almond and other members of the United Church of Ludlow, bocce, the Italian lawn bowling game, has made a dramatic return to Ludlow. Every Tuesday evening, from 6 PM until darkness at Veterans Memorial Park in Ludlow, a large group of bowlers patiently (most of the time) see how close they can come to the pallina (a small white ball that acts as the center of bocce scoring). Almond maps out two bocce courts for the various teams to use. United Church members also provide free lemonade to keep the bowlers hydrated. Almond noted that "the people need these refreshments to ensure that they can aim the balls at the pallina and keep track of their scores". Information about the bocce games is available at 802-228-2414. A warm welcome to all visitors. He added that bocce will continue to be offered to all interested persons on Tuesday evenings in the Veterans Memorial Park starting at 6 PM "until the players can't see the other end of the bocce court". Pictured above is Ludlow resident Bob Kottkamp as he tosses the bocce ball at the 'pallina', the small white ball that is the object of the game. INVITATION TO PLAY BOCCE AT LUDLOW’S VETERAN’S PARK Old people, young people and middle-aged people are all invited to play free bocce on the grass of Ludlow’s Veteran’s Park. The games will continue at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 and on each Tuesday thereafter as long as daylight is sufficient. Free refreshments will be served and are being provided by the United Church of Ludlow. Veterans Park is just across the street from the Fletcher Memorial Library. About 15 years ago, similar bocce games were played at Veteran’s Park and were well attended. In those games, the best player was a woman in her late seventies. It is all just good clean fun! Bocce is one of the earliest known games, dated by historians back to 5000 BC in Egypt. The game spread to Greece in 300 BC and to the Roman Empire shortly thereafter. The Romans spread bocce throughout their vast empire. Second only to soccer, today bocce is the most played sport in the world. The form of bocce that will be played in Veteran’s Park is called “Backyard Bocce”, easy to play because of its simple rules. The British call bocce Lawn Bowling, which is easy to envision. Each bocce grass court is similar to a bowling lane. Each of the two teams in a bocce game have four large balls. There also is a smaller ball (the “pallina”). The object of the game is to have your team’s balls end up closest to the pallina – much like the stake in horseshoes. In each frame only one team is awarded points – one point for each ball that is closer to the pallina than the closest ball of the opposing team. The first team reaching 16 points is the winner of the game. Each team can have one, two or four players. More than one bocce game can be played simultaneously. Deacon’s Discretionary Fund Every once in a while, someone is in need of a little financial support. Years ago, the Deacons started a Discretionary Fund just for the purpose of helping others in need. Recently we have had several requests for assistance and have used this fund to help friends and neighbors in need. So, for the month of June, there will be an envelope in your bulletin that says: Deacons Discretionary Fund. If you would like to give to this fund, please just put your donation in the marked envelope and put it in the offering plate. Any questions just see me.
